Day Trip Accessible Motorcycle Resorts - 29 Dreams Biker Resort Vandiver, AL

March 21, 2005 - (Re-Printed with permission April 1, 2005)

Imagine: Beautiful mountain roads, very little traffic, bikers only, good music, food, beer & alcohol, an exceptional staff attentive to your every need, beautiful scenery, very affordable, peaceful and serene, designed just for us, all within 1 ½ hours from metro Atlanta. It's real, it exists, we were just there!

We left around 10:30 Saturday morning. As is typical in the early spring, the weatherman had missed the predicted temperature by about 10° F. Now, ten degrees may not sound like much to someone in a cage, however, we all know that there is a pretty significant difference between 59° & 69° when you're rolling at 70 mph on two wheels! So, while it was chiller than anticipated at least the rain stayed away. We headed East out of Atlanta on I-20 and in about an hour we found ourselves turning south through the Telledaga Nation Forest for some mountain twists! Yes, we got lost, but only once, even after we stopped and asked for directions! The man at the station assured me that most definitely the road did connect although it didn't actually do so on the map. So much for asking for directions! We abruptly ran out of paved road, it turned to dirt interspersed with gravel! Fortunately we were able to turn our Road Kings around without mishap, backtracked about 6 miles and were once again well on our way to our destination.

29 Dreams is located in Vandiver Alabama. It's easy to find, flanked by dual mountain ridges and great roads, just a little south and east right before Birmingham. We had made reservations on the internet at www.29dreams.com. The web site is full of information about this very impressive biker resort. Plan to make reservations early if you want to stay over and party with these fine folks. Anyway, Tim Langley and his wife own this beautiful, well though out and VERY biker friendly resort. When they say "resort" you can take it literally! The facilities are clean and very well kept, with a nice lodge/bar/restaurant, biker store, campsites, and cabins with a twin bed and bunk beds. Yes, they have liquor and great food. However, the beauty and solitude of the facility is what strikes me most. A meandering stream runs throughout the 29.5 acres (29 dreams, get it!).

The entrance is very inviting, with the lodge as the center point and main gathering area. Classic biker music is piped through a very impressive quality sound system throughout the lodge, outdoor seating area and awesome stage where Biker Barn Bike Wash live bands play! This place was built for bikers, period. In addition to the general gathering and mingling around the main lodge they also have a Biker Barn store with everything you'd expect such as leathers, helmets, gloves, etc. A nice collection of nostalgic bikes adorn this area too!

In addition, a free biker wash and air station are on-site along with a dozen or so fully functional campfire rings. The staff is incredibly attentive to every bikers needs and extremely helpful. Yes, they even have a very nice horseshoe pit, plenty of gorgeous swings, and.....a Tiki bar! The cabins each have a nice front porch, with a bench and a very nice swing. As the lodge (read tavern) was closing for the evening we opted to secure a few adult beverages to take with us, since, being bikers, we weren't exactly sure that we'd actually had enough yet, imagine that? The staff readily filled a nice cooler full of ice and stuffed it with the required "end of the evening" beverages we needed and we were off to our nest for the evening! Earlier, while we were getting unpacked one of the staff asked us if we'd like a fire! Well, being "city folks" we certainly thought that this would be a task much better left to a seasoned professional so we readily agreed! When we got back to our toasty little cabin, low and behold, a professional built fire awaited us. Now folks this may not sound like much but, this was really cool. The whole site is full of nicely designed bricked fire pits along a meandering stream, each lined with bench seating, picnic tables, huge log seats and plenty of firewood, cut and stacked around so all you need to do is toss one on as the evening wanes. All YOU have to do is show up!

There is also PLENTY of solitude and peace here folks. The resort itself has plenty to see. There is a "Hawks Nest" where we're told there are two nesting pairs! We did hear owls in the evening and morning. A whole herd of deer reportedly walked right through the camping sites early in the morning but, of course, we were still resting and sleeping off the "beverages" we elected to partake in the night before.

Finally, the cabins and camp sites share a common bathhouse area. I must say, this was nicer than many of the motels I've stayed in while "on the road". Instead of a common shower & toilet area, each door opens to a private bathroom and shower. They even have washers and dryers! Truly nice, especially for the lady riders! Clean and very well maintained. Conversations with the owners insure even greater things to come! The foundation is being poured for a bike repair/maintenance facility. The resort is only about 7 miles from the world famous Barber Motorcycle Race Track and Museum, certainly a place every biker must see! Take your camera with you and leave your cell phone at home, this is truly a wonderful and unforgettable escape!
